Damage of this nature is usually the result of under humidification or unfortunate impact. Cracks, no matter how small, must be repaired as soon as possible as they will assuredly get worse. At the very least, a crack or split must be reinforced to maintain structural integrity. If desired, there is always the option of finish touch up for visual improvement. However, it cannot be stressed enough that without a complete (and usually prohibitively expensive) refinish, the crack may never disappear.
